Dianthus 'Bewitched' common names: dianthus, garden pink flowering season: May and June, and again in fall height: 6 to 10 inches Light requirements: full sun Soil requirements: average garden soil that is well drained; adding a bit of lime to its soil is recommended Water requirments: water young plants regularly; older plants can be drought resistant Growth habit: a low cushion-shaped plant that spreads moderately How to propagate: take tip cuttings in early summer, or peg-down a side shoot after slicing halfway through it with a knife Leaf type: narrow glaucous-green leaves Ways to use it: for a sunny spot in a garden and especially good in a rock garden; shearing back a plant by a third or a half once a year is recommended Special characteristics: richly fragrant Bewitched has a large number of small flowers, so plentiful they can cover the plant in a solid sheet of color. The color is a light lavender-pink with a darker eye in the center. Its growth is compact and low. The flowers do not flop as do some of the larger, double dianthuses. And very well scented too. Grows well from USDA Zones 5 - 8. Can survive even farther north when covered with snow in winter, or given other protection. |
